Well it is with him who fixed his gaze upon the order of Baha’u’llah and rendereth thanks unto his Lord. For He will assuredly be made manifest. God hath indeed irrevocably ordained it in the Bayan. ——The Bab. # I was but a man like others, asleep upon My couch, when lo, the breezes of the All-Glorious were wafted over Me, and taught me the knowledge of all that hath been. This thing is not from Me, but from One Who is Almighty and All-knowing. . . His all-compelling summons hath reached Me, and caused Me to speak His praise amidst all people. # The best beloved of all things in My sight is Justice; turn not away therefrom if thou desirest Me, and neglect it not that I may confide in thee. By its aid thou shalt see with thine own eyes and not through the eyes of others, and shalt know of thine own knowledge and not thro

Therefore, laws and regulations should be established which would permit the workmen to receive from the factory owner their wages and a share . . . of the profits, or in some other way the body of workmen and the manufacturers should share equitably the profits and advantages . . . It would be well . . . that laws be established, giving moderate profits to manufacturers, and to workmen the necessary means of existence and security for the future. Thus, when they become feeble and cease working, get old and helpless, and die leaving children under age, these children will not be annihilated by excess of poverty. And it is from the income of the factory itself, to which they have a right, that they will derive a little of the means of existence. ——Abdu’l-Baha.. # Now, if hi

The arrangement of the circumstances of the people must be such that poverty shall disappear, that everyone, as far as possible, according to his rank and position, shall share in comfort and well being. # We see amongst us men who are overburdened with riches on the one hand, and on the other those unfortunate ones who starve with nothing; those who possess several stately palaces, and those who have nowhere to lay their head. # This condition of affairs is wrong, and must be remedied. Now the remedy must be carefully undertaken. It cannot be done by bringing to pass absolute equality between men. # Equality is a chimera! It is entirely impracticable! Even if equality could be achieved it could not continue—and if its existence were possible, the whole order of the world would be destroyed.

There are two sorts of retributory punishments. One is vengeance, the other chastisement. Man has not the right to take vengeance, but the community’ has the right to punish the criminal; and this punishment is intended to warn and to prevent, so that no other person will dare to commit a like crime. This punishment is for the protection of man’s rights, but it is not vengeance; vengeance appeases the anger of the heart by opposing one evil to another. This is not allowable; for man has not the right to take vengeance. But if criminals were entirely forgiven, the order of the world would be upset. So punishment is one of the essential necessities for the safety of communities, but he who is oppressed by a transgressor has not the right to take vengeance: on the contrary, he should forgive and pardon, for this is worthy of the world of man.

The Mashriqu’l-Adhkar has important accessories which are accounted of the basic foundations. These are school for orphan children, hospital and dispensary for the poor, home for the incapable, college for the higher scientific education, and hospice. In every city a great Mashriqu’l-Adhkar must be founded after this order. In the Mashriqu’l-Adhkar services will be held every morning. There will be no organ in the Temple. In buildings nearby, festivals, services, conventions, public meetings and spiritual gatherings will be held, but in the Temple the chanting and singing will be unaccompanied.

The day is approaching when all the peoples of the world will have adopted one universal language and one common script. When this is achieved, to whatsoever city a man may journey it shall he as f he were entering his own home. These things are obligatory and absolutely essential. ——Baha’u’llah. # A world language will either be invented or chosen from among the existing languages and will be taught in the schools of all the federated nations as an auxiliary to their mother tongue. ——Shoghi Effendi. # Newspapers are as a mirror, which is endowed with hearing, sight and speech; they are a wonderful phenomenon and a great matter. . . .

And as the Baha’i Faith permeates the masses of the peoples of East and West, and its truth is embraced by the majority of the peoples of a number of the Sovereign States of the world, will the Universal House of Justice attain the plenitude of its power, and exercise, as the supreme organ of the Baha’i Commonwealth, all the rights, the duties, and responsibilities incumbent upon the world’s future super-state. ——Shoghi Effendi. # The unity of the human race as envisaged by Baha’u’llah  implies the establishment of a world commonwealth in which all nations, races, creeds and classes are closely and permanently united, and in which the autonomy of its state members and the personal freedom and initiative of the individuals that compose them are definitely and completely safeguarded. This commonwealth must, as far as we can visualize it, consist of a world legislature, who

Let there be no mistake. The principle of the Oneness of Mankind—-—the pivot round which all the teachings of ——Baha’u’llah revolve—is no mere outburst of ignorant emotionalism or an expression of a vague and pious hope . . . It does not constitute merely the enunciation of an ideal, but stands inseparably associated with an institution adequate to embody its truth, demonstrate its validity, and perpetuate its influence. It implies an organic change in the structure of present-day society, a change such as the world has not yet experienced. It constitutes a challenge, at once bold and universal, to outworn shibboleths of national creeds—creeds that have had their day and which must, in the ordinary course of events as shaped and controlled by Providence, give way to a new gospel, fundamentally different from, and infinitely superior to, what the world has already conceived. It calls for no less than the reconstruction and the demilitarization of the whole civilized world—a world organi

Peace is light whereas war is darkness. Peace is life: war is death. Peace is guidance; war is error. Peace is the foundation of God; war is satanic institution. Peace is the illumination of the world of humanity; war is the destroyer of human foundations.——Abdu’l-Baha ——阿博都-巴哈 # ……It would be unthinkable for [ Baha’is] to willingly place themselves in a position where they must take human life . ——Universal House of Justice.’  …… # It is immaterial whether such activities would still expose them to dangers either at home or in the front, since their desire is not to protect their lives, but to desist from any acts of willful murder. ——Shoghi Effendi. # Extreme pacifists are thus very close to the anarchists, in the sense that both of these groups lay an undue emphasis on the rights and merits of t

To all administrative regulations which the civil authorities have issued from time to time, or will issue in the future in that land [Persia], as in all other countries, the Baha’i community, faithful to its sacred obligations toward its government, and conscious of its civic duties, has yielded, and will continue to yield implicit obedience. ——Shoghi Effendi. If local, state or federal authorities actively prohibit Baha’i life or some aspect of it, then Baha’is must submit to these requirements in all cases. . . . ——Universal House of Justice. In matters, however, that vitally affect the integrity and honor of the Faith of Baha’u’llah, and are tantamount to a recantation of their Faith and repudiation of their innermost belief, they are convinced and are unhesitatingly prepared to vindicate by their lifeblood the sincerity of their conviction, th

We Baha’is are one the world over; we are seeking to build up a new World Order, divine in origin. How can we do this if every Baha’i is a member of a different political party—some of them diametrically opposite to each other? Where is our unity then? We would be divided, because of politics, against ourselves, and this is the opposite of our purpose. Obviously if one Baha’i in Austria is given freedom to choose a political party and join it, however good its aims may be, another Baha’i in Japan or America, or India has the right to do the same thing and he might belong to a party the very opposite in principle to that which the Austrian Baha’i belongs to. Where would be the unity of the Faith then? These two spiritual brothers would be working against each other because of their political affiliations (as the Christians of Europe have been doing in so many fratricidal wars). The best way  for a Baha’i to serve his country and the world is to work for the establishment of Baha’u’llah’

The supply of funds, in support of the National Treasury, constitutes, at the present time, the life-blood of those nascent institutions which you are laboring to erect. Its importance cannot, surely be overestimated. ——Shoghi Effendi. # I feel urged to remind you of the necessity of ever bearing in mind the cardinal principle that all contributions to the Fund are to be purely and strictly voluntary in character. It should be made clear and evident to everyone that any form of compulsion, however slight and indirect, strikes at the very root of the principle underlying the formation of the Fund ever since its inception. While appeals of a general character carefully worded and moving and dignified in tone are welcome under all circumstances it should be left entirely to the discretion of every conscientious believer to decide upon the nature, the amount, and purpose of his or her own contribution for the propagation of the Cause. ——

Baha’u’llah and the Master (Abdu’l-Baha.) in many places and very emphatically have told us to shun entirely all Covenant-breakers as they are afflicted with what we might try and define as contagious spiritual disease; they have also told us, however, to pray for them. These souls are not lost forever. . . . God will forgive any soul if he repents…... # ……Also, it has nothing to do with unity in the Cause; if a man cuts a cancer out of his body to preserve his health and very life no one would suggest that for the sake of unity it should be reintroduced into the otherwise healthy organism! On the contrary, what was once a part of him has so radically changed as to have become a poison.’ ——Shoghi Effendi (through his secretary). ……

[the Universal House of Justice has] exclusive right and prerogative . . . to pronounce upon and deliver the final judgment on such laws and ordinances as Baha’u’llah has not expressly revealed. ——Shoghi Effendi. #  ……Inasmuch as this House of Justice hath power to enact laws that are not expressly recorded in the Book and bear upon daily transactions, so also it hath power to repeal the same . . .  ——Abdu’l-Baha.. …… # True liberty consisteth in man’s submission unto My commandments, little as ye know it. Were men to observe that which We have sent down unto them from the Heaven of Revelation, they would, of a certainty, attain unto perfect  liberty. . . . Whoso hath tasted of its sweetness will refuse to barter it for all the dominion of earth and heaven.

To teach is, to a great extent, the art of listening. If you will listen to the one you want to teach and find out what he wants and needs to hear then you can start your treatment by giving him, from our teachings, the right answer, the right remedy…..  Teaching is excellent discipline for the personal ego, for to teach successfully you have to put yourself in the background and subdue your will and self- expression enough to be a sensitive receiving instrument that will pick up the seeker’s correct wave length. If you tune into that person you can commune with him and through that sympathetic thought you can begin to let the light of the Cause into his mind, you cannot force yourself into another person’s soul or pound the truth into him just through sheer conviction that you are right. ——Ruhiyyih Rabbani.

In the human body, every cell, every organ, every nerve has its part to play. When all do so the body is healthy, vigorous, radiant, ready for every call made upon it. No cell, however humble, lives apart from the body, whether in serving it or receiving from it. This is true of the body of mankind in which God has endowed each humble being with ability and talent, and is supremely true of the body of the Baha’i world community, for this body is already an organism, united in its aspirations, united in its methods, seeking assistance and confirmation from the same Source, and illumined with the conscious knowledge of its unity. Therefore, in this organic, divinely guided, blessed, and illumined body the participation of every believer is of the utmost importance, and is a source of power and vitality as yet unknown to us. ——Universal House of Justice.

They must . . . proceed with the utmost devotion, courtesy, dignity, care and moderation to express their views. They must in every matter search out the truth and not insist upon their own opinion, for stubbornness and persistence in one’s views will lead ultimately to discord and wrangling and the truth will remain hidden. The honored members must with all freedom express their own thoughts, and it is in no wise permissible for one to belittle the thought of another. . .  ——Abdu’l-Baha... # The purpose is to emphasize the statement that consultation must have for its object the investigation of truth. The Assembly should be representative of the choicest and most varied and capable elements in every Baha’i community. ——Shoghi Effendi. # Unlike the nations and peoples of the earth, be thy of the East or of the West, democratic or authoritarian, communist or capitalist, whether belonging to the Old World or the New, who either ignore, trample upon, or extirpate, the racial, religious or political minorities within the sphere of their jurisdiction, every organized community, enlisted under the banner of Baha’u’llah should feel it to be its first and inescapable obligation to nurture, encourage, and safeguard every minority belonging to any faith, race, class or nation within it. ——Shoghi Effendi. # So great and vital is this principle that in such circumstances, as when an equal num

……there is a distinction of fundamental importance which should be always remembered in this connection, and this is between the Spiritual Assembly as an institution, and the persons who comprise it. These are by no means supposed to be perfect, nor can they be considered as inherently superior to the rest of their fellow believers. It is precisely because they are subject to the same human limitations that characterize the other members of the community that they have to be elected every year... . Letter written on behalf of ——Shoghi Effendi. # ……These Local Spiritual Assemblies will have to be elected directly by the friends, and every declared believer of twenty-one years and above, far from standing aloof and assuming an indifferent or independent attitude, should regard it his sacred duty to take part conscientiously and diligently, in the election, the consolidation and th

Humanity, whether viewed in the light of man’s individual conduct or in the existing relationships between organized communities and nations, has, alas, strayed too far and suffered too great a decline to be redeemed through the unaided efforts of the best among its recognized rulers and statesmen—however disinterested their motives, however concerted their action, however unsparing in their zeal and devotion to its cause. No scheme which the calculations of the highest statesmanship  may yet devise; no doctrine which the most distinguished exponents of economic theory may hope to advance; no principle which the most ardent of moralists may strive to inculcate, can provide, in the last resort, adequate foundations upon which the future of a distracted world can be built. ——Shoghi Effendi.
